Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Approach
Communities are the first responders to any crisis. As a result, the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Approach should be the foundation of any risk reduction strategy. The CBDRM approach is a process that results in a locally owned disaster preparedness and risk-reduction strategy. The CBDRM strategy also involves climate-vulnerable communities in the discovery, analysis, planning, implementation, monitoring, and assessment of disaster risk-reduction actions.
The method promoted by Community-based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) is to strengthen people’s ability to cope with disaster risks and reduce their susceptibility, resulting in safer and more resilient communities. These approaches have been recognized and widely practiced by various community groups, national and international organizations and government departments for over two decades in South East Asia countries.
Disasters are viewed as both a cause and a result of climate change. Karachi’s communities are vulnerable to a variety of natural hazards, including heavy urban flooding, heat waves, and shifting rainfall patterns. Climate change and harsh weather pose substantial hazards to the inhabitants of Karachi.
